Duchess of Cornwall labours on new Gloucestershire library

The Duchess of Cornwall was in the Forest of Dean to officially open a new children's library - turning her hand to a spot of bricklaying on the side.

In this day and age everyone needs a second skills to fall back on, and her Royal Highness revealed at least part of her armoury when she visited Bream Community Library.

The Duchess of Cornwall visited the Forest of Dean library where the children showed her their Lego skills, including a completed Lego model of Buckingham Palace.

The royal guest of honour happily joined in and started a new Lego project with the children - a replica of the community library - laying the foundation stone.

The children of Bream CofE Primary School lined the road with their Union Flags, many of them hand coloured, to welcome the Royal visitor.

The community library is completely run by volunteers with the support of Gloucestershire Library Services.

The new children's library was funded through a £5,000 prize awarded by the David Vaisey Trust. They won the prize for their Lego Club which uses the popular toy to encourage children to read.

"The Duchess was wonderful with the children and read them a story," said Dr Mary Rontree, chairwoman of the Bream Community Library Company.

"I understand Her Royal Highness is very keen to promote literacy, especially encouraging young children to read," she said.

The Vaisey Prize - launched in honour of David Vaisey CBE who has dedicated his life to libraries - encourages readers of all ages to borrow, read and discuss books. It also recognises community support and the help Gloucestershire libraries receive from volunteers.
