Doctor honoured as a true National Star

A Gloucester GP has received an award for his work supporting young people with complex medical disabilities and learning difficulties with National Star.

Dr Iain Jarvis received a High Sheriff of Gloucestershire's Award in recognition of his valuable support to charity.

High Sheriff Helen Lovatt said: "National Star has been very dear to my heart for some years.

"It was a privilege and delight to present the High Sheriff's Award to Dr Jarvis.

"He is a self-effacing and selfless man who quietly campaigned to ensure the students were vaccinated ahead of schedule, recognising the importance of their health and well-being."

Dr Jarvis, a partner at the Aspen Medical Practice, has been the college GP for National Star for five years.

Chief executive David Ellis said: "It was Dr Jarvis' dogged determination that enabled National Star students and residents to receive their vaccine in January.

"Students absolutely love Dr Jarvis to the extent that several of them requested that he personally administered their coronavirus vaccine, rather than a college nurse.

"He is a genuine collaborator who proactively shares new ideas that will support students and long-term residents."

In 2019, Dr Jarvis volunteered for National Star's ski trip to Andorra where he worked alongside care staff and tutor to ensure the health, wellbeing and enjoyment of the students on the trip.

He has devoted many years to helping the homeless and has previously run a health centre for homeless patients in Gloucester.

Dr Jarvis said: "Working at National Star College is wonderful.

"It really is my happy place and it is fantastic to work with such a dedicated and highly skilled team of colleagues, and some wonderful students who enrich us week after week."

His commitment to National Star is being tested again in 2021 when he undertakes a Wing Walk in June to raise money for our charity.
