Decisions could shape future of county energy firms

News from central Government which could determine the future of two of Gloucestershire's most high-profile energy companies could arrive in the next few days, according to reports.

At one end of the scale the long-awaited decision on whether Tidal Lagoon Power can go ahead with its multi-million-pound Swansea Bay energy scheme is likely to be a thumbs down, according to Financial Times.

At the other end of the scale the business newspaper and website said it believed it would be a thumb's up for one of the county's resident nuclear firms.

Horizon, the Hitachi-owned Brockworth-based company, is waiting to learn whether the Government is now ready to give it the go-ahead to build its new nuclear power plant at Anglesey.

According to the FT the Government would not confirm a decision had been made on either project.

A negative decision on the Swansea Bay project could possibly sound the death knell for Quays-headquartered Tidal Lagoon.

However, the FT quotes a Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy spokeswoman who said: "The Swansea proposal is more than twice as expensive as the Hinkley power station.

"Any decision on the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project will have to represent value for money for the UK taxpayer as well as the consumer."

A Punchline-Gloucester.com has reported the decision comes more than a year after an independent report called for the scheme to be given the green light and will arrive as office space is being marketed in the same Gloucester building as the already down-sized Tidal Lagoon Power.

It is estimated power generated by the Swansea Bay lagoon would cost £89.90 per MWh over a 90-year period.

We already know the public will pay £92.50 per MWh across 35 years for power from the Hinkley Point C power station being built by that other Gloucestershire nuclear energy giant, EDF.

Tidal Lagoon Power, which whose boss is Stroud businessman Mark Shorrock, has said it remained in the dark about any decision but did expect and announcement "soon".
