Decision time for council name change
By Sarah Wood | 3rd September 2024
Tewkesbury Borough Council will decide this evening (September 3) whether to change its name.
The council is holding an extraordinary council meeting, with all council members having their say on whether to change the name to North Gloucestershire Borough Council.
Two-thirds of members attending the meeting will need to vote in favour of the name change for it to go ahead.
Council members will also be voting on a new logo for the council and approving a spend of up to £10,000 from year-end balances on any costs of changing the name and logo.
If the name change is approved, it will change in December.
Only logos on digital assets will change initially. Physical logos eg on signage will only be changed when they need replacing.
The council decided on May 15 that it was 'minded to' change the name, before launching a consultation for local people and businesses.
The consultation, which ran from May 17 to July 31, had 1,608 responses - the biggest response the council has ever had to a consultation.
The consultation found:
• 58.64% of respondents support the change of name to North Gloucestershire Borough Council
• 86.26% of respondents, having read the rationale, could understand why the council is minded to change its name to North Gloucestershire Borough Council
• One in five respondents were from Tewkesbury, and 59.8% of those were against changing the council's name to North Gloucestershire Borough Council
• Bishop's Cleeve, Brockworth and Churchdown were areas where the majority of respondents would like to see the council's name change to North Gloucestershire Borough Council
Tewkesbury borough is 160 square miles and made up of 51 parishes. Tewkesbury itself accounts for under 3% of the borough's geographic footprint and around 10% of the borough's population. Bishop's Cleeve has more people living in it than any other parish in the borough.
