Decision due on future of Gloucester Ice Rink

Plans to bring the Ice Rink back to Gloucester for at least the next five years look set to be approved.

Proposals by Gloucester Quays to bring the festive attraction to the city every winter until 2029 are due before councillors next week.

If they are approved the event will have secured its future in the city. But if refused the event will not be able to take place this festive season.

Earlier this year Punchline revealed that Quays bosses had applied to the council for permission to use land  at Orchard Square in Llanthony Road, High Orchard Street, Merchants Road, Victoria Dock and Mariners Square for the siting of an Ice Rink, Christmas Market and associated development. The proposal includes the erection of temporary buildings.

The event will run from October 28 to January 18 each year and is estimated to attract 30,000 skaters annually.

Since 2016 the company has been running the event under a series of temporary permissions, the latest of which has now expired.

Members of Gloucester City Council planning committee are due to debate the application on Tuesday, October 1.

One objection has been received which states the period of three months is "unreasonably long" and will create an inconvenience for residents due to lack of access, additional noise, and smell.

A report by officers recommends the plans are approved and concludes: "The proposal would have some limited impacts on access arrangements to businesses and residences within the Docks, and the amenity of local residents but these are not considered to be significant and the applicant proposes a range of measures to limit these effects.

"The proposal is likely to have positive benefits for the economy and for tourism."
