Debenhams to shut 19 stores in January with further closures expected

Gloucester's Debenhams store has escaped the cut as the struggling department store chain announced that 19 more stores will be closing for good.

Debenhams endured a torrid 2019, going into administration in April after a takeover plan by Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley, a significant shareholder in the firm, was rejected.

That led to a CVA being launched and numerous stores being closed in a bid to reduce a debt pile that is reported to be close to £800million.

And now a further 19 stores have been earmarked for almost immediate closure with the doors being closed within the next two weeks with the loss of around 650 jobs.

Gloucester's King's Square store is not on the list, for now, but with a further 25 plus closures earmarked in the next 12 to 24 months, it's future is still far from certain.

Debenhams still operate more than 100 stores nationwide.

Altrincham,
Birmingham The Fort
Kirkcaldy, Fife
Walton-on-Thames
Wandsworth
Wolverhampton
Chatham
Great Yarmouth
Slough
Stockton-on-Tees
Welwyn
