Dame Janet is honoured by city

The Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire is to be made an Honorary Freewoman of Gloucester this weekend.

Dame Janet Trotter will be given the accolade at the annual civic ceremony on Sunday at Gloucester Cathedral.

Among her many achievements, Dame Janet, helped found the University of Gloucestershire in 2001 and served as founding Vice-Chancellor and Principal until her retirement in 2006.

She has also been an active and strong supporter of the business community in Gloucestershire.

As chair of the Council of Church Colleges and Universities she was instrumental in advocating a church presence in higher education and was also a Lay Member of Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral.

She has also held several positions within the National Health Service in Gloucestershire and the South West of England and was chair of the Gloucestershire Hospitals Trust from 2002 until 2010.

Dame Janet is involved in a number of charities including Community Foster Carers, the Nelson Trust and the Cyber Trust: previously she chaired an expert working group for the government on initial teacher education and information technology.

In 2010 she was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire and serves as the representative of the Queen in the county.

Dame Janet received an OBE in 1991, a DBE 10 years later and a CVO in the 2018 New Year's Honours.

Mayor of Gloucester, Councillor Steve Morgan, said: "I'm delighted that we are at long last giving Dame Janet the recognition she so richly deserves. She has worked tirelessly over the years for the good of this city and its residents and I hope this honour goes some way to showing our gratitude for everything she has done."

Dame Janet said: 'This is an enormous honour. I have been involved with the city for many years and love the diversity of its people and value its growing sense of pride and aspiration. I hope to continue to serve the city for many years to come and to witness and support its transformation."
