Cyber team to protect businesses from on-line crime goes live

A new range of cyber services has been launched bringing together the IT expertise of two of Gloucestershire's emerging tech firms to help businesses arm themselves against online-crime.

The Cyber Security Associates' (CSA) Security and Intelligence Operations Centre (SIOC) has many tools at its disposal, but in a simulated test to guests at its official launch it showed just how it could deliver simple effective lessons for any size business.

A test email revealed just how easy it can be to expose potential weaknesses within a group in order to identifying where to focus training - not matter what a firm's resource.

Richard Graham, MP for Gloucester and one of the Government's trade envoys, said: "Cyber-crime is a real and growing threat to business in Gloucestershire and the UK economy.

"What you are doing here at the CSA SIOC will help companies right across the county and beyond with their security and what you are doing will make a significant contribution to Gloucestershire as a centre of cyber excellence."

CSA is the company running the SIOC and is working with its with key partner and near neighbour Severnside Software Ltd, also known as SSL, the business IT support specialists.

Roger White, managing director of SSL, said the partnership was a powerful extra service for its customers.

"We work in the world of IT - and it is moving so rapidly and the cyber threat is constantly evolving. You can't cover everything. You have to partner with people who have the expertise," said Mr White.

"The last thing we want is for any of our customers to face what could be a very serious threat."

David Woodfine, a director of CSA, has 25 years experience in the information security sector, first as a commissioned officer in the RAF and later as a consultant on the commercial side. He is also the man heading-up the new centre.

"It is important to recognise that for cyber criminals smaller businesses are big business. The important thing is to ensure you have robust security you can afford.

"We can help with that and when it is outside of our skill set Roger and his team can step in and help. It is the complete package."

The CSA SIOC can monitor IT end points and servers, test organisations with email phishing campaigns, search the dark-web and internet for leaked information on companies, train individuals with up to date eLearning courses on the cyber threat and how to protect yourself and give face-to-face training at board level to explain why cyber risk is important.

Its Quedgeley nerve centre at Waterwells Business Park - a room filled with screens manned by "young and talented analysts who have a passion for cyber security, who are trained to spot unusual behaviour and stop the cyber threat".

CSA is working with the National Cyber Security Centre to help the new programme for the Cyber School Hubs.
