Almost 1,000 incidents of crime, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour have happened in Co-op shops every day this year.
In the first six months of 2023, there was a total of 175,000 incidents in Co-op supermarkets and convenience stores - an increase of a third, as reported by Sky.
One store in London was "looted" three times in a single day.
Co-op workers have experienced a rise in physical assaults by almost a third year-on-year, and anti-social behaviour and verbal abuse were up by a fifth.
The company said there have been some horrific incidents of violent theft, leaving store staff feeling scared and threatened.
It said the level of crime is out of control and could see some locations become no-go areas for convenience retail.
A Freedom of Information (FOI) request by Co-op revealed that police failed to respond in 71% of serious retail crimes reported nationally.
