Cricket club on front foot with new pavilion

A Cotswold cricket club will benefit from a £1,000 investment in facilities at its new pavilion.

Refreshments will be served up after the day's play from a brand new kitchen area of the pavilion after the Bourton Vale Cricket Club received funding from Gloucestershire County Council's children's activity fund.

The children's activity fund has £5,000 available to each of the 53 electoral divisions in the county. Successful bids need the backing of the local county councillor, which in this case is Cllr Paul Hodgkinson.

The cricket club in Bourton-on-the-Water has received support from the English Cricket Board (ECB) to build a new pavilion on the site of the existing building which has been there for 90 years.

They have already raised around £18,000 towards the new building, and fundraising activity continues as the club looks to improve facilities to help play carry on as a vital part in the local community.

The improvements will allow Bourton Vale CC to accommodate other sports clubs in the area, particularly in the winter, as well as provide a base for the club's thriving youth sections to train.

Building work is due to start in autumn, with an aim for it to be completed in time for the 2018 season.

Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, county councillor for Bourton & Northleach, said: "Helping this fantastic cricket club was an easy decision. A host of young people and children use the facilities and are helping to make the club a vibrant and active place for Bourton and nearby villages.

"I've been impressed at the fundraising that the club is doing to have a brand new club house in place for next year's season. The county council's contribution is a start and is aimed at getting more young people active in their community."

Cllr Tim Harman, cabinet member for public health at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "Our children's activity fund has been used all across the county.

"It has provided many community groups from sports clubs to Scout groups and parish and town councils and schools with funds to grow sports and physical activity."
