County bypass closing overnight for essential repairs

A route between a Gloucestershire town and the neighbouring docks will close temporarily overnight over three days to allow patching work to the road.

Berkeley bypass (B4066) will undergo essential road works from 9th April.

The patching will take place between Station Road and Bridge Road, near Sharpness Docks.

The Berkeley Bypass is a main route from Berkeley towards the Sharpness Docks and is in need of crucial carriageway patching because the road surface has deteriorated and sections of the roads need to be repaired.

Crews will complete essential patching along the 2.65km stretch of road with over 200 tonnes of material.

To keep disruption to a minimum work will take place at night. Starting on Monday 9th April, crews will work between 7pm and 7am until Friday 13th April.

To minimise disruption to the businesses in and around the docks, the county council says the scheme is being delivered in two phases. There is no diversion available for the first phase due to the location of the works from 9-11th April

The second phase from 12th-13th April will have a diversion in place suitable for vehicles less than 3.8m high due to low bridges via Newtown.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and floods, said: "This important scheme shows our continued investment to keep the county moving and is vital to delivering on our £150 million promise to Gloucestershire's highways. These improvements will also lay the foundation for more essential work later next month. I'd like to reassure residents that we will keep disruption to a minimum and thank them for bearing with us."

Cllr Brian Tipper, county councillor for Cam Valley, said: "This is an important route and the resurfacing will have a significant benefit to the local community here in Berkeley. The carriageway has been slowly deteriorating so these vital improvements will help make the journey smoother for everyone."

This scheme will be followed by resurfacing works later in April on the A4066 at Berkeley Heath (A38 to Canonbury Street roundabout). This scheme will also be delivered at night to minimise disruption.
