Council takes over former newspaper site for parking

Dursley Town Council has bought the former Dursley Gazette newspaper site in Long Street to provide a long stay car park.

The council has acquired the site for £475,000 which it says was significantly below the asking price.

The town council believes the new long stay car-park will benefit visitors, walkers, business owners, traders, employees and local residents.

Permission to demolish the existing building was confirmed by Stroud District Council in September following a huge display of public support for the scheme.

The Town Mayor, Cllr Neil Grecian said "a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes and I am pleased that we have achieved our objective of securing the purchase of this plot in 2017. Now the next phase commences to facilitate the construction of a new long stay car park for Dursley."

The town council have appointed a new committee to facilitate and manage the car park project, chaired by Cllr Symon Ackroyd.

He said: "There is a lot of work in front of us and the new committee will be meeting in January to agree a consultant to advise the council through the procurement process and to allow the appointment of the best contractor."
