Council set to give go-ahead for new store and 130 homes

A Gloucestershire council is being recommended to approve a new foodstore and homes after the original plans were revised.

Avocet Industrial Estates want to build a new Lidl store and 130 homes on Dudbridge Industrial Estate, Dudbridge Road, Stroud.

The scheme was deferred by Stroud district councillors earlier this year because members wanted to see significantly more buildings retained on the site which lies between the canal and the River Frome.

Next Tuesday Stroud District Council officers will recommend approval of the substantially changed scheme at a meeting of the Development and Control Committee.

The 2,206 sqm foodstore will have 132 dedicated car parking spaces with some commercial use of the buildings including Redlar House also proposed.

A council report says: "The application as originally submitted, proposed demolition across the site. The extent of demolition has been reduced in the revised plans.

"The scheme is intended to enable the relocation of Stroud Metals to Stonehouse. An alternative site has been identified and permitted."

It adds: "The proposal utilises a brownfield site within an extensive, accessible urban area. The replacement scheme has been substantially redesigned and is appropriate."
