Council reveals first 21 roads being resurfaced in 2021

Gloucestershire County Council has announced which roads will be first of many waiting to be resurfaced in 2021.

Originally, there were 207 miles of road planned for be resurfaced, patched or treated in the current financial year.

But despite the pandemic and challenging working conditions, the council has said it has successfully fought back against potholes and is on track to resurface their target and an extra 15 miles, bringing the total to 222 miles.

Council staff continue to go above and beyond to exceed the amount of work originally planned for 2020/21, and when Gloucestershire's resurfacing programme is complete, the target distance covered would stretch from Gloucester to the Scottish borders (as the crow flies) and includes surface dressing, patching and resurfacing works.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways, said: "Keeping our work on schedule during the pandemic has been challenging and I want to thank each and every one of our highways service staff for going above and beyond to keep Gloucestershire's roads moving. They have worked extremely hard to catch up and exceeded our works programme, delivering the £150 million investment into your highways, and bringing a smoother ride for cyclists too.

"Residents and businesses affected by any of our resurfacing work will receive letters nearer the time with details of exactly what is happening and when, including how to get in touch with us."

Among the residential streets and rural lanes, the council will be returning to Horton Road in Gloucester at the end of January to complete another section of resurfacing work. The section of Horton Road between Mayhill Way and Millbrook Street will have a brand new surface laid overnight. The road will be closed between 7pm and 7am, from January 26 to February 1, returning on February 6 to paint new road markings overnight. A signed diversion will be in place.

Although bad weather can change plans, these are the first 21 roads currently scheduled for some TLC in 2021:

  • Gotherington Lane, Bishops Cleeve
  • Bream Road, Lydney
  • Yorkley Road, Parkend
