Cotswolds technology used by surgeons around the globe
22nd August 2017
Technology developed by a Cotswolds company has been used by surgeons in Australia in a landmark 5000th medical procedure.
Corin Group, based in Cirencester, makes state-of-the-art hip and knee replacements which it exports to leading orthopaedic surgeons worldwide.
Now Dr Richard Boyle, chair of the Northside Board of Studies at the Australian Orthopaedic Association, has performed the 5,000th total hip replacement using Corin's patented Optimised Positioning System Technology.
It comes five years after Dr Boyle performed the very first OPS™ hip replacement and marks a significant milestone in Corin's research and development programme.
The award-winning technology was borne out of years of research showing that because every patient's pelvis moves differently, the historic one-size-fits-all approach to hip replacements was flawed.
Establishing pre-operatively how each patient's pelvis rotates when they sit, stand and carry out various activities helps develop an understanding of the relationship between spine, pelvis and femur.
This data is fed into Corin's specialised engineering software to create a patient-specific report and individualised surgical tools.
It means surgery is tailored to each patient, helping reduce the possibility of complications including squeaking, surface wear and dislocation.
Dr Boyle (pictured right) said: "It's terrific to work so closely with the Corin OPS™ team to drive personalisation in total hip arthroplasty.
"Ultimately, we believe this technology will deliver improved results over the longer term."
A spokesman for Corin said: "Local manufacturing skill combined with strong links to medical experts in the field of orthopaedics has allowed us to develop this technology and flourish in Cirencester.
"Over the past few years, we've focused on a more technology-driven strategy including OPS™."We've continued to develop clinically-proven products as well as embark on a series of acquisitions.
"This combination allows us to compete on the global stage in a competitive fashion, and we continue to be a flexible, evolving company which is rapidly growing yet still agile."
Corin employs over 400 people in Cirencester and locations across Europe and the US.
