Cost of newspapers soars

We've seen a rise in the cost of energy, fuel and food, now newspapers have been hit.

Over the past couple of weeks, there has been a steady rise in the cost of national and regional papers, with many of them increasing their prices by at least 10 per cent.

The cost of raw materials has soared, with a rise in paper, ink and delivery fuel costs, so it's no surprise that the papers have had had to pass these costs on to their readers.

Recent price rises include:

• The Gloucester Citizen - £1.90 to £2.10

• Gloucestershire Echo - £1.90 to £2.10

• The Western Daily Press - £1.15 to £1.35

• The Mirror - 90p to £1.00

• The Daily Mail - 70p to 80p

• The Daily Express - 80p to 90p

• The Sun - 70p to 80p

• The Telegraph - £2.50 to £2.80

• The i - 60p to 70p

• The Times - £2.20 to £2.50

The price of The Guardian has stayed the same, but it was already one of the more expensive newspapers, having increased its price to £2.50 in June 2021.

As the cost-of-living crisis, bites the price rise might have a further negative effect on newspapers' overall readership.

Even where print revenue has remained strong, the papers have never been under so much pressure to compete for eyeballs online.
