Coca-Cola to launch first alcoholic brand
7th March 2018
The world's most popular soft drink is to launch an alcoholic version for the first time in its 125-year history.
Coca-Cola is set to launch an alcopop-style product in Japan. It is keen to cash in on the country's taste for Chu-Hi, sparkling drinks with a kick from a local spirit, as reported by the BBC.
Chu-Hi has been marketed in Japan as an alternative to beer, proving especially popular with female drinkers. The products usually have between three and eight per cent alcohol by volume.
It's thought that the new Coca-Cola drink is unlikely to be sold outside Japan.
Punchline readers of a certain age may remember the 'alcopops' of the 1990s, like Hooch, Reef and Bacardi Breezer, which encouraged young people to drink more because they tasted like soft drinks like lemonade or Lilt.
