City’s new social care centre opens - VIDEO

The regeneration of the centre of Gloucester is moving forward with the completion of a new social care hub.

The new Barbican reception building, located on the site of the old magistrates court, is part of a multi-million pound investment by Gloucestershire County Council.

The hub will provide improved reception access for disabled visitors and families, private rooms for confidential discussions and brings together Gloucester social care teams in one place.

Work began on the redevelopment of the former magistrates court and police buildings in January 2017. The building uses the existing slab, with only minor alterations, to form the new Barbican building and create a fit for purpose space. The design of the brickwork has taken inspiration from the existing listed prison wall.

Led by Kier, 50 different sub-contractors and suppliers have worked on the Barbican building, 30 of which are based in Gloucestershire, with the remaining companies based between Bristol and Birmingham.

The new social care hub will be open to the public on Monday 15th January from 8:45am and replaces the former reception at the county council's Quayside building.

Launching the centre, Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council said: "I am delighted to open this brand new social care hub, part of a huge investment in improvements to our buildings and our services for residents.

"The new Barbican building will provide much better access for residents needing social care support and I want to thank our contractor Kier for delivering this project on time. More than 50 sub-contractors and suppliers have been involved in this build, from across Gloucestershire and the wider region. Congratulations to all involved."
