City councillors celebrate anniversary with charity fundraiser

Two local charities have had a boost from a fundraising event held by two long-serving city councillors.

Discover DeCrypt and Gloucestershire Arthritis Trust have each received a cheque for £3,000 from councillors Pam Tracey and Paul James following a fundraising ball held at the end of last year. The event was held to mark Pam's 25th year as a city councillor and Paul's 10th year as leader of Gloucester City Council.

Around 170 people attended the evening, held at the Wall's Club in Barnwood.

Discover DeCrypt is a project set up to restore St Mary de Crypt Church and the Old Crypt Schoolroom in Southgate Street and will see it become a heritage attraction, cultural centre and educational resource as well as a place of worship. The project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as well as numerous charitable trusts and individuals, but is still raising funds to match the Lottery award.

Gloucestershire Arthritis Trust supports people in the county who suffer with arthritis. It is fundraising for The Chamwell Centre at Milestone School in Longlevens - a project to provide a new hydrotherapy pool for its 300 pupils, many with severe and complex special needs, that can be accessed by community users out of hours.

A lot of the money raised came from an auction on the night which included items donated by former Prime Ministers John Major and David Cameron, former Foreign Secretary William Hague, lyricist Sir Tim Rice and actor Colin Firth, as well as many local businesses. One of the most popular items to be auctioned was a pew from St Mary de Crypt.

Paul said: "I really wanted to do something to mark this anniversary and doing it jointly with Pam seemed right, as we were the only Conservative city councillors in Gloucester when I was first elected and we served together as Mayor and Sheriff. I'm delighted we raised so much money for these wonderful causes. As an Old Cryptian, St Mary de Crypt is special to me and Milestone School is in my ward of Longlevens so I know what amazing work they do there."

Pam said: "It doesn't seem like 25 years of serving on the council because I enjoy helping people and I'll continue to fundraise for the many charities I support. I'd like to thank everyone who attended this event."
