Citizen and Echo owner to change name
5th March 2018
The owner of The Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo, Trinity Mirror, is set to change its name.
The name Trinity Mirror had its roots in the merger between Trinity plc, the then publisher of the Liverpool Echo and other regional titles, and the Mirror group in 1999, as reported by Hold the Front Page.
However it is set to change its name to Reach plc, after deciding the present name no longer reflects the business. The change is expected to be approved by shareholders at the next annual general meeting, to be held on 3rd May.
The group has grown rapidly since 1999, acquiring the Manchester Evening News in 2008, regional publisher Local World, the previous owner of The Citizen and Echo, in 2014, and most recently the Northern & Shell group , publishers of the Daily Express.
The company feels the name 'Reach' better reflects what they do and their ambitions as they reach millions every day through both print and digital platforms.
The move was announced as Trinity Mirror's annual results showed a 12.6 per cent fall in overall revenues during 2017 from £713m to £623m.
It follows the news last month that a number of well-known and well-respected journalists from the county are moving on from The Citizen, Echo and Gloucestershire Live.
