Accolade shines spotlight on growing Cotswold law firm

Walking away with a highly commended at a national awards is no mean feat, and it has also shone the light onto a fast-growing but modest Gloucestershire legal practice.

A congratulatory Tweet from Tanners Solicitors in Cirencester to its staff was a rare moment of public self-congratulation for a firm genuinely pleased to be recognised in a competition which saw it up against some major national names.

And it was doubly pleasing for the staff at the solicitors, not least those who work directly under partner Richard Isaac, who did not even know they were in the running for the Solicitor of the Year Award at the inaugural British Wills and Probate Awards 2018.

"We are a relatively young firm in terms of private client work, although we have been in existence in the form of Nicholas Tanner since 1986," said Mr Isaac, who joined the firm from a City firm 25 years ago and helped establish the private client department in the early 1990s.

Since then it has grown, based on its reputation and service, in what is can be one of the most difficult and sensitive areas of law - dealing with affairs of tax, probate and the affairs of clients, including the elderly.

"It can be a difficult and complicated world in which to grow old," said Mr Isaac.

He added: "We have now grown the private client department considerably and I am very proud of them. I did not say to them I was putting them in for an award.

"It was fantastic to be recognised. I think the one firm that came above us has about 2,000 staff - and they rightfully won."

Tanners, he said, had benefitted from a carefully thought-out approach to building relationships clients can trust. Pairing-up junior staff with more senior members has proved successful, delivering clients both continuity, a personal service and flexibility on price.

A mere 50-staff - when compared to the relative Goliath it went up against at the Arken.Legal-sponsored awards ceremony at the Ardencote Hotel, Warwick - Tanners is growing and considering new offices.

Its specialisms also include agriculture, commercial, employment and family law as well as commercial and residential property, re-mortgages, transfer of equity and dispute resolution.
