Sales up at specialist wine retailer

Wine specialist Majestic Wine today reported a successful Christmas trading period.

The retailer, which has stores in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Cirencester and Stroud, saw sales increase by 6.3 per cent in the 10 weeks to 31st December.

The company's Naked division had a particularly strong performance and while the company's retail arm encountered difficult training conditions, sales were still up by 1.5 per cent.

Rowan Gormley, group chief executive, said: "The team have worked really hard over the Christmas trading period and have delivered sales growth across all our business units.

"Consumer behaviour is changing and we're seeing a revolution in retail. We think there will be winners and losers, and we believe we have what it takes to be one of the winners. We are uniquely placed, with the people, data and skills in place to succeed despite the headwinds we are seeing."

Majestic Wines delivers around 30 per cent of its total annual sales during the Christmas trading period.
