Cheltenham MP Alex Chalk urged to sack Boris Johnson

A call has gone out for Cheltenham MP Alex Chalk to sack Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak following news of their lockdown party fines.

Cheltenham's Liberal Democrats said the Conservative MP must act after police issued the pair with fixed-penalty notices for attending a birthday gathering for the PM at Number 10 which broke Covid rules.

Demand for the PM to go is mounting following the fines, with Nigel Mills reportedly becoming the first Tory backbencher to break rank and tell the PM to fall on his sword.

The MP for Amber Valley, said Mr Johnson's position was "untenable", reports The Independent.

Max Wilkinson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Cheltenham, said it was time for Mr Chalk to act.

"The Conservative MP for our area cannot hide behind lame excuses any longer. It is time for Alex Chalk to sack Boris Johnson. No more ifs or buts.

"Whilst people in Cheltenham made heartbreaking sacrifices during lockdowns, Boris Johnson and his team were partying in Downing Street.

"We all have painful memories of that lockdown, from not being able to see dying relatives, to being separated for months on end from our friends and family.

"How on earth can Conservative MPs keep supporting a law-breaking Prime Minister and Chancellor? This is particularly difficult to understand in our MP's case because he is a key member of the Government legal team and a Barrister.

"Our country needs leadership right now, not a Government in chaos."

Mr Wilkinson said it was another example of Alex Chalk's infamous 'redline' being broken. In 2019 he said that if there was a 'scintilla of a suggestion' the government would act unlawfully, then he would resign.

Mr Wilkinson said: "If he won't call for Johnson to go, then he must at least finally back his words with action and leave his government job."

Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, called for Parliament to be recalled immediately so MPs can hold a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson.

He said: "The country cannot have criminals and liars leading our Government, especially at a time of national and international crisis.

"Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak took the country's sacrifices for granted, while they broke the law to party in Downing Street. They are not fit to hold office. If they had a shred of decency, they would resign."

Speaking on Tuesday, the PM claimed the event he was fined for attending - a gathering in the Cabinet Room to mark his birthday - was brief and lasted less than 10 minutes.

The BBC reports that both the PM and Mr Sunak have rejected calls for their resignations.

Punchline contacted Alex Chalk for a comment.
