VIDEO: Cheese Rolling returns to Gloucestershire
By Bethany Winter | 1st June 2022
Cheese Rolling is back this Sunday (June 5) at Coopers Hill in Little Shurdington.
Cooper's Hill has hosted the traditional event since the 1800s, but due to health and safety concerns, the event was cancelled in 2010 and again in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thousands of spectators and competitors have historically attended the annual event, traditionally held on the May bank holiday weekend.
Eleven years ago, our editor Mark Owen took a tumble down the hill, whilst filming a promotional video.
At the top of the hill, the master of ceremonies releases an 8lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese which can take on speeds of over 70 miles an hour. The first runner to get to the bottom of the hill wins the contest...and the cheese!
The slope on Cooper's Hill is so steep that few contestants manage to stay on their feet and end up tumbling down the hill in a desperate bid to catch the coveted prize.
The wacky race claims many casualties, some needing hospital treatment.
The cheese rolling event is relatively informal with little organisation, so anyone can participate.
If you don't fancy taking part, the best place of view the event is at the bottom of the hill where you can see the entire field.
