Chance to have your say on local radio cutbacks

Gloucestershire residents are being given the chance to have their say on plans to slash BBC local radio coverage in the county.

BBC bosses are looking to reduce the amount of uniquely local broadcasting on BBC Radio Gloucestershire from 100 hours a week to 46.

Local programmes would run from 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday but it would switch to regional content thereafter, with no Gloucestershire-based broadcasting at weekends, apart from sport.

There's a chance for listeners to join the debate tomorrow (Thursday) on the Mark Cummins Breakfast Show from 8am when a senior BBC boss will be on the show to join the discussion.

Speaking on his show this morning, Mark Cummins said the BBC line was that they were not cutting local services but they were moving 10 oer cent of funding to strengthening local online sites.

He said: "It's important to let you know the things you will get - more investigative journalism, more online, more digital, the BBC Sounds app, all that kind of stuff.

"But the reality is we will go from broadcasting from Gloucesterhsire uniquely from 100 hours a week down to 46 with nothing at the weekends apart from sport. and nothing after 2pm uniquely from Gloucestershire.

"One of the key conversations will be the notion of local. They don't agree that the notion of local is Gloucestershire, it's broader than that. I disagree. That's a really important conversation, the difference between local and regional.

"We are responding to you with the official ways to have your say but obviously part of it will be me via you tomorrow at 8am.

"We will be speaking to one of the BBC bosses about what's happening to you as a licence fee payer and the digital offering that you will be getting.

"One of the main things that the BBC will be saying is that about 50 per cent of people don't listen to local radio and by using some of the money saved to produce digital products will make the money go further."

You can tune into BBC Radio Gloucestershire on 95.0-104.7 MHz FM.
