EXCLUSIVE: Cattle Country saddles up for larger leisure offer

A prominent family adventure park in Gloucestershire which has been running since 1992 has asked planners for go-ahead on a new format to its reception area.

If approved, Cattle Country, found on the B4066 at Berkeley Heath and between the A38 and Berkeley town, will expand its existing site with the addition of 185 extra spaces for car parking and a brand new building and welcome experience.

The request to Stroud District Council, from farmer Tony Cullimore, of The Cullimore Partnership which is based at the adjacent Berkeley Heath Farm, has also indicated the addition of an unspecified number of new jobs to the existing 21 full-time and 70 part-time roles at the popular 2.4 hectare adventure park.

A minute's drive from Berkeley Castle, Cattle County began in 1992 as a farming diversification initiative, offering local schools the chance to get up close to rare breeds of cattle.

Subsequent development has seen the creation of extensive outside play areas, while the park has two indoor adventure areas and also boosts its revenue through specific school holiday activities and seasonal events, such as pumpkin picking and bonfire night firework shows.

With an aggregate score of 4.5 out of 5, the facility has earned three certificates of excellence from Tripadvisor. In compeition with Berkeley Castle, an offshoot of the business now also sees an adjacent weddings venue, The Barn at Berkeley, from the same location. The business is a disparate wing of the familiar branding of Moreton C Cullimore and Son Ltd, but is part of the same family dynasty, with the Cullimore name being traced back to farming in Berkeley some 400 years.

Details of the proposals, submitted by Chalford-based Malcolm Hunt Design Ltd suggest the site's current provision of 365 parking spaces would grow to 550, while a new 464 sqm building would also be built at the site.

Resultant foul sewage, the submission indicates, would be spread on surrounding farmland.

Hamfallow Parish Council has been asked to return its views on the proposals by January 31.

Back in 2019, amid plans for a new development stage at the venue, the business announced record-breaking visitor numbers.
