Cancer fails to stop Linda's marathon dream

A Cheltenham cancer sufferer has raised an incredible £15,000 after running the TCS London Marathon with her son on Sunday.

Linda Jackson was joined by her son David in running the marathon for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice.

Linda was first diagnosed with a rare Neuroendocrine tumour - metastatic cancer - in 2011 and began running in 2022.

Linda said: "In 1981, I sat with my parents watching the first London Marathon on television, inspired by the courage and spirit of the runners. I never imagined that, decades later and living with metastatic cancer, I could be on that start line myself.

"For me, applying for the London Marathon was an act of hope - a fitness dream and a way of focusing on taking life one day at a time. My training was a slow, steady process, starting with short runs and gradually building up, always with a friend or family member by my side. On marathon day, my son ran alongside me as my support runner, encouraging me every step of the way.

"The organisers went above and beyond to make participation possible for people like me living with cancer. I was privileged to run in support of Sue Ryder, which runs Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, a place that offers vital support for those affected by death, dying, and grief - not just patients, but their families and loved ones too.

"The whole experience was overwhelming and deeply humbling. We took it steady, embraced the atmosphere, and truly enjoyed every moment. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we raised an incredible £15,000 to support this essential work

"Crossing the finish line, I realised that cancer hasn't stopped me - and I hope it won't stop the dreams of others either.

"Watching the London Marathon once inspired me. Now, I hope to pass that on and show others living with cancer that it is possible. Believe in yourself - take it one step at a time - you can do it too."

Hannah Britton from Sue Ryder said: "We are also delighted to share that this year our incredible London Marathon runners raised a total of £423,000, with donations still coming in, helping us to continue to be there when it matters."
