Golf day and 19th hole festivities raise thousands for Pied Piper

Children across Gloucestershire helped by the much-loved Pied Piper charity are set to benefit to the tune of £17,000 thanks to the generosity of the county's business community.

A golf day organised by Gloucester-headquartered Brunsdon Financial Services Ltd saw 100 business people don the kind of gear only lovers of the sport dare wear - and tee off at Tewkesbury Park Golf Course.

Undaunted, but not unfettered by the blustery conditions, the intrepid threesomes and foursomes battled the distinctly autumnal elements and the course (with mixed results - but we won't go into that here).

Equal enthusiasm was put into activities on what golfing types call the 19th hole, with a two-course meal and refreshments flowing the auction helped drive the total takings onwards and upwards.

Prizes included a week's holiday, tickets to the X2 British Grand Prix, a one hour flight in a light aircraft for two people, a signed replica 2007 Rugby World Cup shirt and Gloucester Rugby hospitality box for four people as well as a signed Charlie Sharples Gloucester Rugby testimonial shirt.

"We prayed for no rain, and got it. We have 100 golfers out there and raised an estimated £17,000 for Pied Piper. It has been a fantastic day," said Marcus Gomery, managing director of both Brunsdon Financial Services Ltd and Brunsdon Employee Benefits Ltd, who as well as the golf course also played host for the event.

"It is an amazing charity helping the children of Gloucestershire. We love them."

Nick Broady, chairman of the Pied Piper Appeal, entrepreneur and managing director of the Avenue Group, said: "It has been a fantastic day. Thank you to Brunsdon and thank you to Tewkesbury Park. The support has been amazing. Seventeen thousand pounds is amazing."

Sponsors for the event also included IFSL Fund Service, Investec, Brooks Macdonald (BM), Cazenove Capital and Scottish Widows.

Pied Piper was founded in 1992. Its mission is to make a difference to the lives of sick and disabled children in the county which it does by funding medical and practical equipment to enhance care and treatment for children in hospital and in the special schools in Gloucestershire.

It also pays to send children with life limiting illnesses and their families on Wish Holidays, supports the ever growing mental health care in Gloucestershire and funds nursing training for the paediatric nurses in the county to ensure that the children get the most up to date care possible.
