Bridge work sparks disruption to tall boats

Tall boats won't be able to come in or out of Gloucester Docks over Easter due to bridge repairs.

The Canal & River Trust is carrying out works to High Orchard Bridge, which carries St Ann Way over the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

A spokesperson said: "The works are planned to take place over the next two weeks.

"Whilst boats will still be able to navigate the canal, the bridge will remain in its closed position until the repairs are completed. This will unfortunately restrict the use of the canal for taller boats."

A Punchline-Gloucester.com reader got in touch to say that one of the tall ships, which had been in Gloucester Docks for several months was due to sail out this week but had been unable to do so due to the bridge by Sainsbury's developing a fault and currently being out of action.

He said: "This means that anything under five metres will still be able to sail under the bridge, but the tall ship 'Leader', which was due to sail out on Monday of this week is effectively trapped in the Docks until the repair has been completed.

"One positive is that it effectively acts as an additional attraction and point of interest for visitors to the Docks."

He added: "The main dock basin usually fills up with visiting yachts and cruisers over the Easter weekend. Local businesses lost out over the corresponding time last year due to the dock basin being closed due to dredging."
