Brexit Party will not contest five Gloucestershire seats in the General Election
By James Young | 11th November 2019
There will be only one Brexit Party candidate in Gloucestershire for the forthcoming General Election, Nigel Farage has revealed.
Mr Farage announced that his new party that claimed 14 of the 73 seats in this year's European Elections, will not stand candidates against the 317 incumbent Conservative MPs.
That means there will not be a Brexit Party challenger on the ballot paper in five out of the six constituencies in Gloucestershire on December 12.
Cheltenham, Gloucester, Tewkesbury, The Cotswolds and The Forest of Dean all have incumbent Conservative MPs.
The county was entirely Conservative from 2010 through to 2017, when Labour reclaimed Stroud.
Stroud voted 55 per cent to remain in the 2016 referendum, with only Cheltenham (56 per cent) posting higher results for remain.
Mr Farage said that the decision had been made to give the Conservatives "half a chance" in the election as their plan is to not have another referendum or to stop Brexit altogether.
The former UKIP leader, who started the Brexit Party earlier this year to fight the EU Elections had said he was originally planning to field candidates in all 650 parliamentary constituencies.
The final deadline for registering candidates is on November 14, after which the full lists for each constituency will be published.
