BREAKING NEWS: Liz Truss resigns as Prime Minister
By David Wood | 20th October 2022
Liz Truss has announced her resignation as Prime Minister after six chaotic weeks.
Speaking outside Downing Street, she said she had told King Charles she was resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.
She said she had met with 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady today.
They agreed there will be a leadership election within the next week, adding that she will remain as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.
Ms Truss is the briefest serving PM in UK history, having been in office for just 45 days.
Trouble began for Ms Truss when her first Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, spooked the financial markets with his mini-budget on 23 September.
Since then, disquiet within the Conservative Party has led to widespread anger.
Ms Truss's resignation follows dramatic scenes in the House of Commons last night over a vote on fracking. There was fury last night around the vote and the methods used to get MPs to vote with the government. Calls for her to go continued to grow in the hours afterwards.
