BREAKING: Kwarteng out, Hunt in after mini-budget backlash

Kwasi Kwarteng has been sacked as chancellor and replaced by Jeremy Hunt, after the mini-budget led to a revolt from Tory MPs.

The close ally of PM Liz Truss spent just 38 days in the role, making him Britain's second shortest-serving chancellor.

During a very brief press conference, in which she took just four questions, Truss said she was "incredibly sorry" to lose Kwasi Kwarteng as chancellor, calling him a "great friend".

Of Hunt, she said he "shares my vision", and cited his experience as a minister.

Richard Graham, MP for Gloucester, backed Jeremy Hunt in the first round of the Conservative leadership election, while all the county's other MPs backed Rishi Sunak.

Asked why she should stay, when the mini-budget was the work of two people, Truss said her priority is making sure the Government delivers economic stability, which she says is why she took the difficult decision to sack Kwarteng.

Punchline said: "These are unprecedented times and the Government is in turmoil. We talked about Kwarteng's future on Business Breakfast Briefers this morning. Most of us thought he would at least make it to next week!

"Now the big question has to be - can Liz Truss survive the weekend as prime minister?"
