BREAKING: Another Tesco heading for Gloucestershire

A planning application has been submitted for a new Tesco Express in the county.

Tesco Stores Ltd is seeking permission from Cheltenham Borough Council for a new shopfront, new external signage and minor internal works to a shop in the town centre.

106 Promenade, on the corner of Imperial Lane, was Gap for many years and most recently Little Dobbies. The Grade II listed building is in Cheltenham's Central Conservation Area.

Tesco is proposing non-illuminated vinyl advertising in the windows, which will be applied internally. To be more in keeping with the conservation area, colour will be kept to a minimum, with the Tesco logo on a black background.

The covering letter from ROK Planning to support the planning application said: "The advertisements are designed to respectfully frame the shopfront and be in keeping with the proportions of the ground floor of the building."

The proposed changes to the shopfront are minor, preserving the current appearance, including the recessed entrance.

The design includes retaining the existing swing door and window panelling, with a new bi-parting sliding door, with glazing, to be installed behind the retained features.

Planning permission is also sought for some minor internal changes to the unit and new louvres at the rear of the building to conceal the new plant solution.

If it gets the go-ahead, the new convenience store will be the third Tesco Express in the town centre - in addition to one on The Strand and one in the Brewery Quarter.

The covering letter concludes: "Overall, the proposed works will be in keeping with the existing use of the unit and the wider area in terms of its commercial context. They have been designed so as not to disturb the street scene nor impact the historic character of the building and wider conservation area. It is therefore considered that this proposal will not harm the character and appearance of the conservation area, nor adversely impact the Grade II Listed building."

The planning application is open for consultation until September 30.
