Breakfast behind bars

Local bankers and solicitors had breakfast with a difference last week, when they attended the Hazlewoods 'Breakfast Behind Bars' at the historic Gloucester Prison.

Hazlewoods hosts two tax breakfasts a year at venues in and around Cheltenham and Gloucester, to update local professionals on topics in the world of tax. To shake things up at the start of 2018, it was decided to take the event on tour to the 200-year-old HMP Gloucester.

The venue, which closed as a prison in 2013, is set to be turned into over 200 apartments by developer, City and Country. This made it an ideal opportunity to get in and view the prison before changes start to take place, possibly as soon as the end of this year.

Although no porridge was served, the morning was not short of jokes about having a prison full of accountants, bankers and solicitors! Guests were provided with updates on property taxes, international tax, capital gains tax and much more, as well as the opportunity to stay and explore the prison after the event.

Nick Haines, Hazlewoods tax partner, said: "Our Big Fat Tax Breakfast is always popular, but this was a great opportunity to do something really unique. The venue provided much discussion, as did the topics our speakers presented, so we are looking forward to where we can take the event next."
