Break-ins pile funding pressure on school

A break-in at a Gloucestershire primary school over the weekend has highlighted a need for separate security funding, the school's head has warned.
The Blue Coat CEVA primary in Wotton-under-Edge was broken into with no significant damage reported. But with school budgets severely limited, deterring crime poses an increasing challenge.
Headteacher Glyn Jones said: "The ideal for the school would be an investment for CCTV. We have had two break-ins recently and, as much as anything, the concern is for the safety of anyone doing something like this."
Last April, the neighbouring British School in Wotton reported extensive losses when thieves stripped lead from the school's roof. CCTV at the school did not cover the roof.
Headteacher Abel Roche said: "CCTV is a cost that I think will be thousands of pounds. Thousands of pounds we should be spending on books or resources for the children that we're having to spend on keeping the school secure and safe, which is a sad state of affairs".
The Blue Coat School's Parent Teacher Association is considering an appeal among the business community to help upgrade the school's security.
