Boundary changes may be dropped
6th September 2017
The Government is set to shelve boundary changes which would have altered Gloucestershire Parliamentary constituencies, according to media reports.
The Government is said to be unsure whether it would have got the boundary reforms through Parliament.
Under the proposals the people of Quedgeley could have been bounced from the Gloucester Parliamentary constituency into the neighbouring Stroud constituency.
And Longlevens would have moved from the Tewkesbury constituency to Gloucester. A new constituency would be formed including Dursley, Yate and Thornbury.
The Springbank ward in Cheltenham would move to Tewkesbury and the Forest of Dean would be renamed the West Gloucestershire constituency taking Coombe Hill from Tewkesbury.
Lib Dem leader on Gloucester City Council, Cllr Jeremy Hilton said: "Under the draft plans drawn up last year Longlevens would have been represented by Gloucester's MP.
"The Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for Longlevens to be part of the Gloucester constituency rather than be represented by Tewkesbury's MP.
"People in Longlevens identify with Gloucester far more than Tewkesbury and many have supported our campaign.
"The furthermost boundary of Longlevens is just a mile from the city centre. You can hear the roar from Kingsholm on match days - yet Longlevens is represented by an MP from a town 12 miles away.
"I would hope that when we get do have another review the system in place would allow us to retain Quedgeley, but also return Longlevens to the Gloucester constituency."
