Gloucester Cathedral has exceeded its £30,000 target in The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2017.

The challenge - which lasted just a week - gave supporters the unique opportunity to double the value of their donations if they gave online. In total, over £32,000 was raised and almost 150 people gave to the appeal.

All of the funding will be put towards the crucial repair of the Grade 2* listed war memorial in the cathedral's grounds. The project - which also aims to make the memorial more accessible - is scheduled to begin in spring 2018 and will be completed in time for World War 1 centenary commemorations later in the year.

A number of local organisations made generous contributions, including £5,000 donations from both The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Trust and the Friends of Gloucester Cathedral. The Diocese of Gloucester also supported the challenge.

The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said: "We are delighted to have reached our Big Give Christmas Challenge target. This was an extraordinary opportunity and the support given by the local community has been nothing short of remarkable. To have raised over £30,000 in just seven days is humbling and reflects the importance of the memorial to people across the city and county. Thank you to everyone for getting behind the campaign."
