Big brand names sign up to sell direct to consumers
2nd November 2017
Some of the biggest grocery brand names could soon be delivered directly to your door, without ever going near a supermarket.
Unilever, which has one of the biggest ice cream factories in Europe in Barnwood, is just one of the companies to sign up to a new digital shopping service to sell their brands direct to consumers, as reported by Retail Gazette. The other big names set to join the platform are Mars and Reckitt Benckiser.
The new digital grocery service, which is designed by tech firm INS, claims it could cut shopping bills by 30 per cent as it allows wholesalers to sell directly to consumers, without having to deal with the middlemen of wholesalers and grocery retailers.
So some of the biggest brands from Persil to Dolmio and Marmite to Magnum could soon be a whole lot cheaper to buy.
What does this mean for supermarkets? Could it be the beginning of the end?
Here at Punchline we can see that there a lot of people who wouldn't go to a supermarket if they could get the exact same products at 30 per cent cheaper. But there are plenty of others who would still prefer to choose products for themselves and actually enjoy the experience of shopping.
The platform could launch in the UK as early as next year.
