Best-selling author to share leadership advice at Cotswolds club

Pilot turned international speaker Peter Docker will share his views on leadership at Fairford & Lechlade Business Club this month.

He spent 25 years in the Royal Air Force before co-authoring global best-selling book Find Your Why.

His latest book is Leading From The Jumpseat: How to Create Extraordinary Opportunities by Handing Over Control.

One nail-biting extract reads: "As the engines howled and we thundered along the tarmac, there was no warning of what was about to happen.

"When the turbulence hit, I could feel my own body straining against the straps that held me tightly in my seat.

"Meanwhile, Calum was doing his utmost to keep the aircraft flying away from the ground. Seated in the jumpseat behind him, I watched Calum wrestle with the controls. 140 people's lives were hanging in the balance.

"As the most experienced and senior pilot on the aircraft, taking the wrong action could seriously affect everyone's chances of survival. What would you have done in my position?"

After retiring from the RAF, Peter worked with American author and inspirational speaker Simon Sinek and was one of the founding igniters on his team.

Together with David Mead they co-authored Find Your Why: A Practical Guide for Discovering Purpose for You and Your Team, which sold more than 480,000 copies.

He has now developed his own jumpseat philosophy which is about lifting people up and giving them the space they need so that, when the time is right, they can take the lead.

Peter believes in business and life, handing over the reins to others is inevitable and good leaders should prepare their successors to take control and carry on forward.

His book gives advice on how to interact with people to enhance performance in any given situation - during normal business, times of crisis, and life in general.

He will be sharing his advice at the Cotswold club's next meeting on Thursday, November 24 from 7.30pm. It will be held in Lord Faringdon's private theatre at Buscot Park estate.

Members, non-members and those in the blue light services and military are welcome to attend.

Peter said: "It's a pleasure to be asked to speak at an event in my local area and to share some of what I take to business leaders around the world.

"When we choose to Lead from the Jumpseat it creates extraordinary results. I hope to see local businesses, emergency service personnel and those in the military attending."
