At last! Great news for drivers as roadworks come to an end
27th June 2017
Motorists are set to breathe a huge sigh of relief as a major bridge project finally comes to an end.
Traffic management will be lifted for the final time at Berkeley Bridge on Thursday 29 June, following the removal of the old bridge in February.
Weighing nearly 100 tonnes, the old bridge was lifted out using a specialist crane that had enough reach and strength to move it which then installed the beams for the new bridge at the same time.
Since then the focus has been on improving roads in the area with new barriers being installed including improved kerbing, surfacing and white lining being laid.
Utility companies BT and Wales and West Utilities have accessed the network to carry out works and help minimise disruption at the same time these improvements were made.
Cabinet member responsible for infrastructure at Gloucestershire County Council Cllr Nigel Moor said: "This has been a major project involving highways, rail operators and utilities companies.
"Moving the old bridge was a fantastic bit of engineering work requiring time and skill to plan and install.
"That new structure is now in place and we have made improvements to the road layout in the area ahead of the completion on Wednesday.
"I would again like to thank everyone for their patience whilst the work has taken place."
This morning the road will be placed under traffic light control for one last time to allow for resurfacing and line painting which will take place from after rush hour today and through until Thursday afternoon.
