Arrest made after attempted theft of a cash machine from Cotswold beauty spot

Detectives investigating the attempted theft of a cash machine (ATM) in Bourton-on-the-Water in the early hours of this morning  have arrested a man.

The 40-year-old-man was arrested at an address in Cheltenham and is now in custody awaiting questioning.

Police were called to the Cotswold village at about 2.15am after a member of the public reported seeing a white Transit van attached to the ATM at the Londis store, in High Street, as thieves attempted to pull it from the wall.

The van pulled away dragging the ATM with it but the occupants then got out and left the scene in a silver car, possibly a BMW.

The ATM was left in the middle of the road with the cash contents intact.

Scenes of crime officers have been working at the scene this morning and the abandoned vehicle and the ATM have now been recovered.

Officers are following a number of lines of enquiry and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in Bourton-on-the-Water or saw any of the vehicles arriving or leaving.

Det Sgt Jon Newton said: "We are grateful to the members of the public who alerted us to the incident which enabled us to be on the scene quickly.

"Thankfully nothing was stolen, but we are aware of the damage caused and the impact this will have on the local community and visitors to this popular village.

"We would like to hear from anyone who has information which would help our investigation and enable us to bring the offenders to justice."

Anyone with information is asked to call Gloucestershire Constabulary on 101 quoting incident 22 of 22 May.
