VIDEO: Another South African hit in Gloucester - and this one doesn't play rugby

It's not just at Kingsholm where South African beef is proving to be a hit with the people of Gloucester.

At Gloucester Rugby, the play-off bound Cherry and Whites can call upon a growing number of Springbok stars under South African head coach Johann Ackermann.

But just a few miles from Kingsholm there is another export of the Rainbow Nation proving to be smash hit.

Hillray Biltong and South African Products Ltd have recently moved into new premises on Kestrel Court on the Waterwells Business Park and business is booming.

Founded by Gloucester-born Paul Hill - a man who has spent 40 years of his life in South Africa - the shop and café specialises in selling products that will be familiar to Ackermann, Franco Mostert and pals.

Mr Hill explained that while they stock a full range of South African stock cupboard staples, it was their home made meat products that were the best sellers.

"We have a full range of food and drinks that would be on the shelves and we make our own biltong dry wors and boerewors," he said.

"All of our sausages and biltong are made from first-grade beef, it has no nonsense in it. It's just pure meat.

"We do dry wors and boerewors as well and sell about 180 packs of our sausages every week.

"We sell lots of the biltong too, it's especially good for body builders, because it's so high in protein and has no soya or shortening in it, just meat."

As well as the meat products, Hillray also sell a wide-range of products that prove popular with South African expats and Brits alike.

"We sell a whole range of products that you would find on the shelves of any supermarket in South Africa," Mr Hill added.

"We find that a lot of our British customers come in for barbecue spices, we have a full range of those and a full range of sauces as well.

"The South African flavour profile is very different to the English one and that's why the prove to be so popular."

Hillray Biltong and South African products can be found at Unit 6 in Kestrel Court on the Waterwells Business Park in Quedgeley and is open from 9am until 5pm.
