Another drive-thru Starbucks approved in Gloucester

Plans for another drive-thru coffee shop have been approved for Gloucester- bringing the city total well into double digits.

A Starbucks will be built at The Peel Centre off St Annes Way after an application was green lit on Friday (Nov 22).

There are already 12 venues which offer drive-thru coffee in Gloucester and a further five which offer kerbside pick-up, according to Google.

The decision comes just days after a drive-thru coffee shop was approved for Kingsway Business Park  in Quedgeley, despite more than 60 objections and concerns about over-saturation of coffee shops in the area.

Starbucks already has two branches in the city- a drive-thru at Gloucester Retail Park and dine-in restaurant in Eastgate Street. Its new location will be built on land next to the former Cineworld which is now a SureStore.

It is just a stone's throw from the existing Costa Gloucester Quays drive-thru. The American brand also has drive-thrus in Triangle Park, Bristol Road and Hardwicke and sells coffee from 50 locations across the city, including self-service machines.

Objectors to the Starbucks plans said they did not think it was needed and raised concerns about congestion, litter, noise and antisocial behavior from the site.

One said: "Why do we need another drive-thru on our doorstep? Do not relish the noise of more unnecessary litter dropped around where I live."

The Starbucks will be built on land formerly used for parking with a one-way system implemented at the drive-thru and give-way junction. It will have 37 standard parking bays, two disabled bays and a large order waiting bay and will be open from 6am to 11pm Monday to Sunday and on bank holidays.

Around 10 full-time and 10 part-time jobs are expected to be created as part of the plans.

A planning and design statement written by Alder King Planning Consultants on behalf of the applicant said: "The proposed development would provide an ancillary food and drink service facility for visiting customers and staff of the retail units.

"The customer base will be drawn predominantly from existing users of the facilities.

"Now that the former cinema building is going to be used as a self-storage unit with ancillary sales, the proposal will bring further investment to the Peel Centre."

Highways officers did not object to the plan.

A report by Gloucester City Council planning officers said customers would likely combine a visit to the drive thru with a trip to the retail park shops and there "the need would not logically be met anywhere else."

It said the development will provide a "physical barrier to joy riding in the area" and "natural surveillance" of the vacant site meaning antisocial behavior issues would be expected to decrease.

The plans were approved by delegate decision.
