Sales pass £150 million at café and bar chain

The company that owns a number of niche bars and restaurants in Gloucestershire has seen its annual sales pass £150 million.

Loungers, the owners of Gloucester's Portivo Lounge, the Cosy Club in Cheltenham and Lounge-monikered bars in Stroud, Tewkesbury and Cirencester, said its annual results represented a "strong performance".

It has been a busy year for the business, famously started by two Bristol entrepreneurs in 2002 and now grown to 154 all-day bars and cafes across England and Wales.

Back in April it floated on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) where it raised £61.6m to fuel growth plans.

Earnings before tax (EBITDA) rose from £16.6 million to £20.6 million in the 52 weeks to April 21 with sales rising from £121.1 million to £153 million.

"These results represent a strong performance for the financial year ending 21 April 2019 and are in line with both our, and the market's, expectations," said Loungers chief executive Nick Collins.

"Our revenue and profit growth not only reflect the continued success of the roll-out, but also our unwavering focus on our customers, the evolution of our proposition and how we support and invest in our teams."

The business now has an estimated 600 staff. Its stated ambition is to open up to 25 new venues annually and Mr Collins described the "roll-out strategy" for both brands as "on schedule".
