Annual quiz raises £2,000 for two charities

Quiz buffs helped raise a fabulous £2,000 for two Gloucestershire charities at an annual event last night (Thursday).

The quiz, organised jointly by Randall & Payne chartered accountants and WSP solicitors, was supported by 21 teams from the Gloucestershire business community.

Originally set for July 4, King Stanley Village Hall became a polling station, so it was moved to July 18. The new date clashed with the cricket festival, which resulted in a slightly reduced number of teams, but the event still achieved a similar fundraising total with £1,000 each for Teckels Animal Sanctuaries and Young Gloucestershire, who both entered teams.

Randall & Payne partner Rob Case co-hosted the event, as he has done since its inception back in 2009, alongside this year's quiz master, Faye Hatcher, ex BBC Radio Gloucestershire presenter and producer who donated a Pet Portrait commission which was particularly relevant to Teckels and was won by one of the WSP team members.

Skye from Teckels spoke to the room about their charity and Faye Hatcher commented that she was surprised by the £45,000 monthly cost to run the sanctuary.

Young Gloucestershire supports young people to have the confidence, motivation and skills to improve their lives and spokesman TJ also addressed the room mentioning that they receive well over 100 referrals each week.

Ten rounds of tricky questions included Superheroes, Riddles, TV & Film, Music and a round about Gloucestershire parishes and towns.

The overall winning team, named Shed 7, have been attending for many years and last night took the glory, closely followed by joint second teams, The Quizzly Bears and The Hubblers.

Punchline also entered a team and settled for mid-table mediocrity.

Pizza provided by Pizzeria Molto Bene was served during the evening and there was also a raffle with a selection of great prizes ranging from a paintballing voucher for 10 people, four Gloucester Rugby tickets, a Westonbirt hamper from Regency Hampers and Giffords Circus branded goodies.

The organisers thanked all the individuals and local businesses for the generous donations to the raffle which raised £685 of the total. Without these prizes they would not be able to raise so much for our chosen charities.

Faye Hatcher said at the end of the evening: "This is the third quiz that I've hosted. It's been brilliant tonight with local businesses coming together to raise money for two Gloucestershire charities. We've heard that every penny makes a difference to these charities.

"People are here to have fun. They're having a drink and having a pizza but everybody is very respectful. There's great camaraderie and all those amazing raffle prizes with local businesses digging deep and donating makes tonight just so special."

Rob Case said: "It is great to be involved with a fun-filled event with a purpose and see the money raised for charity each year. A massive thanks to all involved."
