Amazon to close grocery stores

It's the end of the line for Amazon Fresh stores in the UK.

The business is set to close all 19 of its Fresh stores, with plans to turn five of them into Whole Foods Market stores, as reported by Retail Gazette.

The online retail giant hasn't confirmed how many jobs will be lost, but it said it is planning to offer workers new roles elsewhere in the company.

Amazon said the closures are part of a wider revamp of its UK grocery operations, which will be centred on the core online business.

It said it continues to 'invent and invest' to help customers shop for a wide range of groceries and everyday essentials with fast delivery.

It's just four years since Amazon Fresh opened its first UK outlet in Ealing, West London.

Amazon acquired Whole Foods for £10.7bn in 2017 - a few months before it closed the Cheltenham store, which is now Food Warehouse.
