All aboard! the Gloucester Express steams into city

Almost 400 visitors arrived in Gloucester today on a stylish steam train.

The champagne flowed as the A4 class Pacific steam locomotive Union of South Africa thundered through the county.

Visitors paid between £109 and £269 to travel in 1950s style luxury in ten coaches from London to Gloucester.

Dubbed the Cathedrals Express the service was provided by Surrey-based Steam Dreams and it helped put Gloucester on the tourism map.

Passengers visited the Victorian Christmas Market and other landmarks during the four hour stay in the city.

A spokesman for Steam Dreams said: "We go to a lot of Christmas Markets this time of year but it is the first time we have come to Gloucester."
