And they're off: airport predicts record exodus for the sun

With not much to write home about in the British summer and most Gloucestershire schools breaking up tomorrow, Bristol Airport says it is gearing up for its busiest ever holiday getaway.

Just over 1.6m MILLION passengers are planning to travel through the airport during the holiday period of mid July to early September, the travel hub says.

A spokesman told Punchline-Gloucester.com: "More than 1.6 million customers are expected to travel through over the holiday period, with more than 40,000 customers flying on some days and around 155,000 people expected to use our airport during the August Bank holiday weekend."

Top destinations are also clear, the airport says, with a quest for heat being the main reason to fly. Palma de Mallorca and Alicante are the airport's top picks, while Faro is also proving popular, and increasing interest is reported in Turkey – with more than 450 flights to Dalaman and Antalya planned during the peak summer season.

For those less focused on getting a tan, Dublin, Edinburgh and Amsterdam are still the top city breaks this summer.

But amid the good news the airport reports for activity, it is also sounding a warning over current travel restrictions.

In line with security measures announced by the Department for Transport last month, passengers must restrict liquids, gels and pastes to 100ml per item, although these will be able to remain in hand luggage along with all electronics while passing through security screening.

The airport added: "It's still important to empty pockets and place loose items in hand luggage, with metal water bottles emptied before entering security. Coats, hats and belts should be placed in the tray provided with a hand luggage bag on top. Customers may still be asked to take off shoes."

Passengers are reminded to arrive at the terminal in plenty of time before their flight departure to complete check-in, bag drop, security checks and boarding processes, the airport says, while they should check with their airline directly if they wish to confirm the precise check-in opening times.
