Acquisition of garden centre will help multi-million pound business grow

The sale of Cheltenham Garden Centre is due to be completed next month to a major rival.

Wyvale has confirmed its plans to go ahead with the sale of the Evesham Road business, south of Bishops Cleeve.

Brentford headquartered Wyevale is having something of an end of season clear out, selling its Bridgemere centre to Blue Diamond as well as closing its Potters Bar (Hertfordshire) and Syon Park (London) centres.

As for the Cheltenham Garden Centre, it is understood it will continue to operate as usual under its new owners.

Edward Webb, chairman of Worcestershire-based Webbs, said: "Cheltenham will be our third centre and is the perfect fit, giving us a very natural extension to our existing and long-established customer base.

"We look forward to welcoming the team on board and continuing to develop Cheltenham into a store that embraces the local community."

Wyevale chief operating officer Anthony Jones said he was "disappointed" the company had been forced to close two of its businesses.

It is understood that 78 Wyevale staff are affected as a result of two store closures.

Once 150-stores strong, Wyevale's estate is now down to 32 garden centres plus six trading under license.

Webbs Garden Centres recently announced an increase in turnover from £16.7 million to £17.7 million for the year ending December 30, 2018.
