A417 improvement scheme shifts up a gear
20th November 2017
Highways England will ask Gloucestershire road users for their opinions on the route options for the A417 'missing link' project early next year.
The missing link is a 5km stretch of single carriageway on the A417 trunk road. The remainder of the route between the M4 at Swindon and M5 at Gloucester is all dual carriageway.
The route is a key link between the West Midlands and London and is used by more than 34,000 vehicles a day. It also has one of the worst average vehicle delays of all routes in the region.
Finding a solution is a priority for the county council, with nearly 7,000 people and businesses pledging their support for the scheme, which is being delivered by Highways England.
Cllr Lynden Stowe, cabinet member for economic development (pictured), said: "The county council has been pushing for decades to sort out the A417 missing link, and I know road users will be as pleased as I am that progress is moving forwards. As always, residents' opinions are the driving factor behind what we do, so it is excellent news that Highways England will be consulting with road users in the new year."
